EXERCISE OF THE WEEK!!! This exercise is great for postural awareness and spinal control. It works on all the muscles close to your spine that help you stay upright. The wall provides a source of movement feedback so you can feel whether you are moving correctly. As you become more aware of yourself, you can also perform the exercise away from the wall. Start standing with your feet a little bit away from the wall but your bottom, back and head touching the wall. Stand with soft knees and feet facing forwards. The aim is to move your body during the exercise in segments. Begin by gently tucking your chin in. Slowly peel your upper back off the wall, one vertebra at a time. Continue to peel your spine off the wall, only as far as you feel comfortable. When you reach your limit, beginning with the lowest point on your spine, gently roll back up and press each segment back into the wall. When you reach the top, ensure that you squeeze your shoulder blades back and down and gently tuck your chin in to return to your perfect posture. Remember to always consult your Exercise Physiologist or Physiotherapist in determining whether this exercise is right for you.
