EXHIBITION: A Glimpse at “Downton Abbey” Era Fashions at the Conrad Mansion 1912-1923, Kalispell, MT The Conrad Mansion Museum has a special historic clothing exhibit on the second floor called A Glimpse at “Downton Abbey” Era Fashions at the Conrad Mansion 1912-1923 opening May 15, 2014. The television program Downton Abbey has been very popular, so it seemed timely to tie women’s clothing from the Conrad Mansion Historic Clothing Collection to the time period of that program. Season one opened with the sinking of the Titanic in 1912 and the fourth season of Downton Abbey just concluded in 1923. While men’s fashions stagnated in the early twentieth century, women’s fashions changed in three to five year increments. By 1912, women’s fashions had changed from the heavy stiff fabrics, rigidly fitted corsets, and floor length skirts of the nineteenth century to lighter fabrics, a looser fit, and ankle length skirts, a precursor of what we wear today. In 1912, etiquette required a wealthy woman have a completely different ensemble for different times of the day and for each different occasion during the day, but by the end of World War I in 1918, the rules had loosened. This exhibit begins in the morning and follows the fashions worn for each time and/or occasion during that day. Like the costumes worn on Downton Abbey, there are beautiful examples of women’s fashions worn between 1912 and 1923. Learn more here: conradmansion/ClothingExhibit.html
