EXPOSED!!! JUNE 12 UNIUYO RIOT: Why Vice Chancellor’s office was set ablaze. Fresh facts are emerging as to why the office of the Vice Chancellor and other sensitive offices in th University of Uyo were set ablaze, during a peaceful protest by students, concerning the issue of transportation from their main campus to the University’s permanent site, also increase in the academic year for Students of the Faculty of Continuing Education from 5 to 6 years, the lack of lecture halls, poor electricity supply, poor water supply in the hostels, non-mobilization of students for NYSC even after they might have been through with their academic work and other bad managerial defects by the management of the University. It could be recalled that on 12 June, 2013, at about 8am in the morning, students from the Engineering and Science faculty were resisted from using the school buses which was to convey them to their permanent site, except they part with the sum 200 naira, a fare that was agreed on by a committee of both the SUG and management. The students protested against the hike in the transport fare because they were not involved in the decision taking at that level. This is so because the students had since lost faith in the ability and leadership of Comrade Lucky the SUG president mediating for them. The protest which started around 8am was peaceful till around 3.30pm, when external bodies hijacked the peaceful protest and started looting the office of the VC. A peaceful protest of 8 hours could have been discontinued if the Dean of Student or a top management staff had addressed the protesting students. A staff who pleaded to be anonymous said those who looted the office of the VC were not students rather external bodies whose interest was all about carting away to a safe location hard disc’s of computers, laptops and files at the VC office and Cash Office. It should be noted that students were rather protesting along Ikpa Road and not around the VC’s office, one wonders how students who were are Ikpa road will at the same time be setting ablaze the VC’s office. Why would students whose interest was to let authority and management know that their plight resort to looting and burning down sensitive office? Recently it was speculated that the VC of the University Prof Comfort Ekpo was at the EFCC on invitation, This was later confirmed by a source at the EFCC Headquarters, who said she was invited for questioning pertaining to a loan the VC approved and secured for a senior staff of the university, who at the moment is cooling his feet at Police Headquarters,Ikot Akpan Abia, Akwa Ibom. The loan was granted by a new generation bank located along Ikot Ekpene Road, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, is said to be up to tune up of N350million naira, the unpaid loan is said to have sent the Branch manager of the bank into hiding. The Loan, which is said to have been accessed by mainly fake staffs of the University, who were recruited by those who got the approval for the loan. The loan is said to have been used to set-up a Dredging plant at Etinan Local Government of Akwa Ibom state. The senior staff who was arrested by the police was later release 3 days after a bond was arranged. Those involved in the loan scandal, are those behind the destruction and setting ablaze the office of the VC and Budget/Cash office to kill the evidence of such transaction. During the Visit of the governor to the university, he even “described the riot as criminal, targeted and premeditated”. Finally, many lives have been lost in the June 12 peaceful protest turn Riot, properties worth millions of Naira have been destroyed, students transcript and results were also destroyed, the fate of the 23rd June batch b intending Corpers who didn’t get to collect their results hangs in the balance, I pray an independent investigative panel should be setup to look into the matter while the management of the University should step aside.
