EXTENDED SPELL OF WET WEATHER MOVING IN (Heavy rain watch) : Over the last few days we at CWU have been watching a very complex weather system in the Tasman slowly but surely move south. Latest models and maps now show a very wet and rather long extended spell of wet weather. What you need to know: • Conditions will deteriorate during Sunday afternoon, with periods of rain developing along the Kaikoura Coast and North Canterbury. Rain will gradually move south into Christchurch by mid afternoon or evening • By evening expect periods of rain across the region, including Christchurch city. • There is the potential for heavy falls during Sunday afternoon and evening about the hills of North Canterbury and Kaikoura. • Monday will see cloudy and wet conditions across the region with more persistent and heavy falls about the mid and South Canterbury foothills, elsewhere expect periods of rain. • Tuesday looks likely to see heavier more widespread falls across the region. Due to the nature of this weather system areas such as North Canterbury and the Kaikoura Coast should see the heaviest falls, however there is also a risk of heavy persistent rain about the foothills of South and Mid Canterbury • Conditions should start to ease by Wednesday morning. • There is the POTENTIAL for more surface flooding in Christchurch and many flood prone areas across the region. At this stage there is still some uncertainty on rainfall totals and how much oomph this system will have by the time it makes landfall here in Canterbury. • SKI BUNNIES: This system of weather could well provide significant totals above 1600m (40cm). Fingers crossed! Perhaps more on the upper slopes. Keep up to date here at CWU! Josh will be back tonight with all the latest. - Russ
