EXTRA! EXTRA! READ ALL ABOUT IT! POP SUPERSTAR BECOMES BREATHLESS! Warren Beatty had to find someone to fill the role of the mob moll chanteuse, Breathless Mahoney. Names like Melanie Griffith, Kathleen Turner, Kim Basinger, and Michelle Pfeiffer were thrown around the director/star as he went thru a list of actresses. It wasnt long however when pop superstar Madonna came into the picture. After not hearing from him concerning the role, she decided to call him instead which lead to them having dinner at the LA hotspot, The Ivy in late 1988. According to the Beatty biography, Star by Peter Biskind, many of his friends warned him not to hire her as they had with Sean Young. In the end however, Madonna was officially hired before the filming took place and agreed to work for actors scale of $1,500. per week. But Madonna being a savvy businesswoman negotiated a percentage of the gross of the film, as well as merchandise and video sales that would end up bringing her $5 million dollars by the end of 1990!
