EXTRA LIFE - LOOKING BACK (AND AHEAD!) Team CSU Bakersfields 2013 Extra Life 12-hour Gaming Marathon is in the books. However, even through the event is over, its hard to put a firm number on how much was raised and how many attended. But here goes: Approximately 200 people attended this years event, compared to 80 last year (our first). At the close of the event, we had raised exactly $6,000 online, and another $3,001 at the event. So, as Mario Hernandez wanted so badly to say, ITS OVER NINE THOUSAND! However, after that announcement, more money was given to us by Drew from Paladins Game Castle. Drew allowed Dungeons & Dragons players to re-roll the dice at $.25 per re-roll, and he raised $165 more for us that way! On top of that, Eds Community Engagement project proposal for the grad center was selected for funding, which will result in another $500 going to Extra Life. This years Extra Life is technically not over until December 31, and with these two late additions, its very likely that we can actually hit $10,000 before the end of November! Dont stop asking for support. If someone was on the fence and didnt get it to you before the event, keep asking! Heres the link, just in case: tinyurl/extralifebakersfield Photographer Brady Cabe took some amazing photos and video for us, and we will get those up and viewable by all, very soon. IF YOU ATTENDED EXTRA LIFE, we created a survey and wed like to ask you to fill it out, to help us with future events. Some people filled them out at the event, but many did not, mostly because we did a bad job of letting people know they were there. So, if you didnt fill one out, please go here and fill one out online: surveyact/s/EEGrsi42lDBYpien Here are some ideas already for next year: 1) Move the time to 9 AM to 9 PM so there is not so much pressure to get the Student union completely reset by 11 PM. This will also keep us from having to stop things early in order to make the cutoff time. 2) Change the name to Team Bako to better represent that its all of us together and not just a subset of Bakersfield (the school, or the club). 3) More tables for consoles, and more correct power cords. 4) Fewer units of game software = less check in hassle. Stick with the popular titles. 5) Fewer dedicated machines, more free play machines. 6) Sports games were popular but there wasnt much interest in the tournaments, which was really surprising. We should reconsider sports tournaments. Lots more to consider, but thats a starting point. Lets take a second to recognize some amazing people and companies. We got amazing support from members of the National Honor Society, Sensational Sophomores, the CSUB Nursing students, Computer Science and Engineering Club, and Japan and Beyond, making this much more than a Campus Gamers thing. Emily Poole, E.J. Callahan and the staff of the CSUB Student Union were REMARKABLE. Special shout-out to Mickey Mello for raising $1,000, and congrats for winning the Xbox One, and to C.J. Webb for raising over $500 and her hard work at the event. Thank you to Jersey Mikes Subs, Grand Island Dental, Panda Express, Coca-Cola, Costco and Walmart on Gosford, for keeping us in food and drink the whole 12 hours. The traditional thought is, well have tons of food left over. Not this year. Gamers were eating mountains of food as fast as we could get it on the tables. Extra special thank you to Chris Guillen at Guard Break/ProLab Gaming for the massive undertaking that was the fighting tournaments and the livestream over twitch.tv. Thank you to Existence Games for bringing Exodus, Paladins Game Castle and X-Treme Game Pit for hosting D&D, The Ascend for handling sports duties, Matt and Josh and friends for organizing the shooter tournaments, and Ottos for the tabletop games (although they had to cut out early because of illness). Thank you, Carrie Swidecki, for your tireless dancing! For prizes, the list is seemingly endless: Microsoft, 343 industries, Nintendo, Respawn, Epic Games, EA Sports, Ubisoft, Bethesda, the Bakersfield Condors hockey team, Elephant Bar, Harmonix, Zen Studios, PopCap, Michael Meyers Public Relations, Plantronics, Astro GAMING, TURTLE FREAKIN BEACH!, 2K Games, Rising Star Games, UFO Interactive, Sega, TellTale Games, Twisted Pixel, Kern Bridges Youth Homes, Ottos Video Games and More, and Paladins Game Castle. Thanks to members who donated prizes: Eric Garza, Alex Cesare and Christine and Jimmie Frye. Last but certainly not least, Mike Henriquez from pluggnplay, who helped arrange the majority of these prize donations and also donated his own! Thank you to Lourdes Nilon from Childrens Miracle Network. Ten thousand thank-yous, we hope. :) Finally thank you to all the Campus Gamers members who asked for support and got it, who told others about the event, who worked events to promote Extra Life, who loaned us their consoles, games and monitors, and who worked at the event to keep things running as smoothly as possible. And thank you to all our supporters, who donated so they or others could go. We had a huge impact on our school, our town, and most importantly, our childrens medical center - the reason for all this. YAAAAAAY! /kermitflail - CSUB Campus Gamers -
