EYE-I just been watching this MA final video of mine again and rather pleased its been watched over 4,000 times - probably not all the way through - anyway thought id repost it up here again youtu.be/xjSCuUGNtLM?list=PL0E36FC2EDFF5FA60 Lyon-he-art final piece for the MA in Digital Media Art at the University of Brighton 2012 Three questions: What are your thoughts about your own personality, your soul/spirit and how you felt being asked those questions. Here are the replies. Its forty five minutes so make a chance to space out and see how long you last. Designed to dip and out of really projected big, but on a computer I recommend headphones or a decent sound system if you can to get the full effect. An especially crafted evocative soundtrack (aesthetic enhancement) was composed to compliment Eye-I, playing with the overall show title of Feedback (the title of the exhibition), and comprising of multiple layers and sections of ambience to give extra gravitas to the recorded answers. Using Logic Pro and Adobe Audition, this Lyon-he-art production is as much about the layered soundtrack as the visuals, with a compelling and hypnotic wash of feedback and pulses complimenting the super close up views of micro gestures, blink points and eye accessing cues to create a mesmerizing audio visual open text narrative in this main piece and a real sense of momentum and coherence in the Minds Eye accompanying (making of...) video. The participants are all being asked to feed back thoughts about themselves whilst being closely monitored in a very unusually micro close up view. Like all Lyon-he-arts work on the MA in Digital Media Arts, there is too a play with, and challenge to notions of duality. The line between inside and outside (ourselves) is explored, as well as reassurance and disturbance. The speech feedback is intended to let viewers feel reassured that on a very basic level we are all very similar and that it is okay to be ourselves. At the same time it digs below the surface and insists that we look beyond everyday complacency at who we are. There is something uncomfortably vulnerable about being so close to an eye. It requires the trust of the subject to be viewed in this way. Intimacy here is very much about into-me-see, and whatever belief you may have around spirit or soul, it is fascinating to hear these voices open up about themselves and watch what the eye does as they address each of the three questions. The first one around personality is a relative known, the second around soul/spirit is an abstract, and the third is an emotional response to the situation plus reflection. In every case there is something to observe around both blink points and eye accessing cues. NLP theory proposes our eyes move involuntarily when we access memories or imagine/make up anything. This was not the place to research this formally, but results do seem to bear out that in almost all cases the eye moves or blinks during the process at very key points, and definitely tells its own story. Windows are evocative for so many reasons. Portals through to other spaces, light sources and frames. Much of our lives are literally seen through them. Every subject in Eye-I literally has a window reflected in their eye, with myself shadowed within that too. Is that symbolic? Well within much personal development thinking, we are all mirrors to each other and these reflections offer a chance to recognize that I know all these contributors in various ways, and therefore they are all aspects of myself re-presented here in my art. Inspirations and acknowledgements I am adding below. Respect and thanks for showing the way to be experimental, expand, challenge and create with light and beauty.
