Honorable Sir, I am a medical student hailing from Punjab studying in a public sector medical college of Azad Kashmir (MBBS MC) currently in my third year. I am writing to you after hearing the news that the education committee, under the supervision of the Law Minister of Punjab Mr. Rana Mashood has recommended to you to abolish the entry test for admission in medical colleges and engineering colleges of Punjab. Being the chief executive of the province, I have come to know that your honorable self has the final say on the matter. With utmost respect, I plead to you to not approve any such recommendation for the following reasons: 1: There are only approximately 3300 slots for admissions in public sector medical colleges of Punjab while the candidates applying for admissions each year are more then 45,000. 2: There are multiple Boards of Intermediate and Secondary Education throughout Punjab and it is a fact that they all function independently and have many differences. 3: There have also been various justified accusations of irregularities against various such Boards. 4: Their exams paper are also different from each other. 5: Many students in the province are studying in O/A Levels system which is altogether different from Pakistani matriculation and intermediate exams in many regards and also there are many students from the overseas that appear in the Provinces Entry Test. 6: Therefore, there has to be a common criteria to judge all candidates applying for admissions from all the various boards and other systems and needless to say, the entry test provides such a common medium where students from all walks of life compete amongst themselves to get admissions on merit. 7: This system has proven itself quite effective to judge the students of the whole province from all walks of life on merit and is quite transparent. 8: In all the developed countries like USA, UK, India etc such entry tests or other equivalent exams exist and have been in place for several decades, singling out the best of the best candidates for admissions. 9: If the entry test system is abolished, students will not be judged on equal grounds and there will be no common criteria or medium for students to compete in. 10: There is a strong probability that the abolishment of the entry test will result in admissions in the most prestigious medical colleges being given on grounds of nepotism and bribery, which are evils that have a strong presence in our society. 11: This will lead to unqualified and ill equipped candidates getting admissions in medical colleges, which will lead to production of unqualified doctors, ill equipped to save and conserve the sacred human life. There are so many more serious disadvantages of abolishment of entry test, the most important ones are only listed above. Therefore, it is very important that the common medium that judges all the students from different education systems equally, be held in place and if there are some flaws in the entry test system then those flaws should be eradicated instead abolishment of the whole system altogether. I am asking this of you as you have promised that your government’s policy in the province is based on the uplift of merit and that all decisions and admissions would be made solely on merit basis. So please dont approve the decision to abolish the entry test as it will destroy merit based admissions and will promote nepotism and bribery and many innocent, hardworking, intelligent and capable students from the middle and lower class of the province will fail to get their right to quality education on merit.
