‘Each school should have complaint cell for women’ THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD LAY DOWN THE EXACT PROCEDURE, TO FORM THE CELL AND SPECIFY ITS DUTIES. ANJANA PRAKASH, principal, Hansraj Morarji Public School MUMBAI: The state school education department has asked each school in the state to set up a complaint redressal cell for women, as recommended in the report submitted by the Justice CS Dharmadhikari committee in 2010, suggesting measures to curb crimes against women. Women’s safety committees will also be formed at different levels. The department uploaded a government resolution (GR) dated January 14 on its official website on Friday, stating redressal cells should be formed in all schools. It was issued after the Bombay high court on December 18 last year told the state government to accept the panel’s recommendations on women’s safety. The report, submitted by the panel, has been gathering dust since 2010, as the government was unwilling to accept its recommendations. “We recommended this to address the main issue of security of the girls,” said Dharmadhikari. “It is also aimed at making them feel secure psychologically.” “Education officials should follow up with schools,” reads the GR. “The directors of education will present the data to the state government.” The GR evoked mixed reactions from city schools, as principals remained divided on whether the cells are necessary. “There is no need for such cells right now, the school principal is equipped to handle such complaints,” said Anjana Prakash, principal, Hansraj Morarji Public School, Andheri. “Also, this may lead to reverse discrimination against men staff members and boys studying in schools.” Prakash said the GR does not mention how to go about forming these cells. “The government should lay down the exact procedure, to form the cell and specify its duties,” she said. On the other hand, Ruma Chakraborty, principal, Swami Vivekananda International School, Gorai, said, “This was the need of the day. We will form the cell as required by the department.” Note | Department Government Resolution (GR) dated January 14 2015 attached herewith for your kind reference.
