Each year FOCUS (Fellowship of Christians United in Service) distributes Thanksgiving groceries to Harris county residents who cannot afford a traditional holiday meal. 2014 marks the 24th year of our Thanksgiving food program and FOCUS will help more families than ever, with nearly 500 families expected to apply and qualify for assistance. Qualified applicants will receive a Thanksgiving baking hen and quantities of food based on their family size. Harris County residents may apply for Thanksgiving food at the FOCUS office in Hamilton Monday, November 3 through Saturday, November 8. FOCUS is open Monday -Friday 10:00 - 2:00 and Saturday 10:00 - 12:00. People under age 65 must bring food stamps card and people over 65 must bring proof of monthly income. The FOCUS office is located in Hamilton (across the street and south of Wells Fargo). Applicants will then receive a food ticket which must be redeemed when they return to pick up their groceries on Saturday, November 22nd. Families will need to pick up their groceries at the Harris County Community Center at 7509 GA Hwy. 116 in Hamilton (just past St. Nicholas Episcopal Church on the right) on Saturday, November 22nd between 9:00 - 11:00am. Applicants who are unable to pick up their food will be able to apply for delivery to their homes. FOCUS relies on dozens of volunteers to provide labor for this annual event and invites and encourages community members to participate by volunteering. Volunteers are needed at the FOCUS office Monday, November 17th and Tuesday, November 18th from 10am-2pm to sort and count food items collected from schools, scouts, etc. On Friday, November 21st, FOCUS needs volunteers from 9am-12pm to bag and package food based on family size at the Harris County Community Center. Food will be distributed on Saturday, November 22nd and volunteers are needed to arrive at the Harris County Community Center between 8am-8:30am to prepare for crowd and parking control, to help the elderly take food to their cars, and clean up after the event.
