Each year around this time I am confronted with the fact that I simply cannot and will not believe in the whole sacrificial death/human sacrifice/ redemption ideology at the heart of Christianity. The idea that God was so mad at humans that only the brutal vicious death of his son would convince him to stop being pissed off ... no, I dont buy it. In fact, I think its deeply offensive. Im with the Buddha on this one: Only you can save yourself, and the only way you can do that is to change your own behavior. Believe on Lord all you want, it makes no difference if your behavior does not change. I have no doubt that Christ was crucified, not to save us from our sins, but because he challenged the authority of the high priests. We kill anyone who does that - Jesus, Gandhi, Martin Luther King. Jesus may also have known his behavior would get him killed, and he was probably willing to risk it to help others. But Ill forego the whole washed in the blood of the lamb business as being a barbaric throw-back to the ancient Jews and their ritual slaughter of innocent animals as a way to atone for their sins. (Ahem: Let the unfriending begin!)
