Ear wax is a mixture of sebaceous secretions and skin tissue. It initially starts out as a sticky liquid and later hardens to become ear wax. Never put cotton buds or Q tips into the ear. It just pushes the ear wax deeper and deeper into the ear canal. When it hardens, it forms an impaction which is very hard to remove. Sometimes cotton buds can even get stuck in the ear canal which complicates matters. The proper way to clean the ears is to use a ear wax solution like Tropex or Waxol. That will soften the ear wax and will naturally come out by itself. Impaction of the ear wax requires treatment by ear flushing. This is first treated with the ear wax softener for a week. Then warm water syringed into the ear canal to break the ear wax bit by bit for it to come out. Cotton buds can be used outside the ear canal to clean the folds of the pinna but never put it inside the ear canal.
