Earl Scottie Thompson wins NCAA Season 90 MVP award Perpetual Helps Earl Scottie Thompson soothed his teams heartbreaking Final Four defeat to San Beda by running away with the Most Valuable Player award in the 90th NCAA basketball tournament. Thompson was the highlight of the leagues awarding ceremonies, which took place moments before game 1 of the NCAA mens basketball finals between the San Beda Red Lions and Arellano Chiefs. Masarap, Thompson described winning the MVP award. Siguro ito yung naging award saakin, he later said about the fruits of his labor. Except in blocks, Thompson, 21, was a dominant force the whole season with an all-around game deserving of the most coveted individual plum. So impressive was the Digos, Davao del Sur native, in fact, that he posted a pair of triple-double performance this season and finished in the top 10 of almost every statistical department possible to help lift the Altas to a third straight Final Four stint. In all, Thompson averaged 17.07 points (fourth-best), 11.36 rebounds (fifth), 5.50 assists (tied for second), 1.64 steals (seventh) and almost a block a game to make up for a second worst 4.07 turnovers a game. Thomspon thus became the first Perpetual Help player to bag the award in 14 seasons. Earl Scottie Thompson went to Manila in 2010 from Digos, Davao del Sur without getting scholarship offers from any top collegiate schools except for Perpetual Help. Six years later, hes one of the best collegiate players in the land. Only Perpetual Help recruited me, said Thompson in Filipino. But I didnt let it stop me and just work hard every day to improve. Thompson said his next goal is to help the Las Pinas-based school win their first ever championship next year. “Winning the championship is better than winning the MVP so I will do my best to win it next year,”said Thompson in Filipino. And he will have a lot of help in Nigerians Akhueti Bright and Eze Prince. Theyre good and very strong players, Im looking forward for another memorable season, said Thompson, who became the first Perpetual Help player to bag the award since Jose Manalo won it 14 seasons ago. The only other Perpetual Help player to win such award was Eric Clement Quiday in 1989. Aside from being part of the Mythical Five alongside teammate Harold Arboleda, San Bedas Ola Adeogun, San Sebastians Bradwyn Guinto and Arellano Universitys Jiovani Jalalon, Thompson also made it to the All-Defensive squad composed of Gabayni, Adeogun, Guinto and Jose Rizals Abdul Razak Abdul Wahab. In the Juniors Division, Altas player Raphael Chavez was named Rookie of the Year. He also made the cut in the All-Defensive Team.
