Earlier, I was at the back of our house with random books piled on our terrace.. Im already in a different world reading an Almanac (wait.. a what?) yeah, to feed my empty brain.. and then a student studying just near our house asked me this question that made my jaw drop: Why are introverts seen as nerds like you? I am kinda an introvert but I am not a nerd by any means. I value learning and wisdom, however. Why does society see introverts as nerds? I am not anti-social but a selective social type. Theres a difference. I only have average computer skills. I dont have a habit/mannerism/hobby that is seen as strange by society. I do value learning and I am quiet however (okay, only when Im lost in a book or if someone doesnt piss me off). Calling someone a nerd is a means to ridicule, pressure or coerce another person into faking the behavior of an extrovert, this is an example of forcing conformity to a narrow set of societal expectations held by myopic extroverts. Ive read many quotes from extroverts who are convinced that everyone should be an extrovert, obviously this is an ignorant assumption that is devoid of any basis in reality. The fact that you feel the need to add a disclaimer to an unconscious reaction to the label of nerd is proof that using the term nerd has been sufficiently marginalized that youve gone out of your way to avoid being associated with the term. People often tell me as nerd or introvert because I dont open my problem to anyone and rather be all alone. Honestly, I really dont care. I have no problem with that, adopting this term removes any potential stigma the word may hold for me, although some people probably do not have the self-confidence or self-esteem to handle pejorative framed labels. The mystery of the introvert has baffled people since the beginning of time. Its really not a mystery, but more of a misconception. If your able to entertain yourself with simple things, wheres the problem? People that cant be alone, are the ones I worry about. Constantly on the phone texting and talking. What is so important? Its beyond my comprehension. So if youre like me, happy to do stuff on your own.. Youll get a lot done. I like people, but they can be a distraction. If Im working on something and someone wants to help, great. But if they just get in the way, their wasting my time. So whether they call me introvert or nerd, doesnt matter. Im still human. And as long as Im happy with myself and do the things I love, then the hell what other people say. I DARE TO BE DIFFERENT. BOW.
