Earlier this month, I wrote a post about how all of the Bible, not just the New Testament, was written to point us to Christ. Jesus Himself testified of this in John 5:39-40 (ESV), when He said, 39 You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, 40 yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life. I mentioned that I would point out types and shadows of Jesus as I worked my way through my Bible reading plan. Ive skipped a few of the more obvious ones (such as when Abraham almost sacrifices Isaac, clearly pointing to the cross), but I found a pretty cool one today that I wanted to point out. In Genesis 44, Joseph is second-in-command in Egypt and his brothers are coming, including his youngest brother Benjamin. Theyre there to get Simeon back and get some food during the famine. Joseph sets them up with the silver cup that just happens to be in Benjamins bag. Judah steps forward and in verse 33 offers to stay in Egypt as a slave instead of Benjamin, for he says in verse 34, For how can I return to my father if the boy is not with me? I couldnt bear to see the anguish this would cause my father. (NLT) What does this have to do with Jesus? Jesus comes from the tribe of Judah and here his ancestor puts others before himself. Judah was far from perfect (see Judah and Tamar if you disagree), but here he shows that he cares more about his brothers and especially his own father than what happens to him. Jesus Christ would show this in the most tremendous of ways, offering Himself as a substitute for our sins to show that God so loved the world.
