Earlier this morning I disturbed a yellow jacket nest (a hole in the ground) and was stung on the hand. These hurt worse than a sting from a Costa Rican scorpion, in my opinion. But it reminded me that wasps are most aggressive from now until the end of August at this latitude. They have brood in their nests, and they are will protect that nest vigorously. They are particularly sensitive to any vibration (e.g., walking or mowing) near the entrance to their hole. Be careful out there!
