Earlier this semester in my #BlackMusicOC class we talked about jazz + gender, but not just in making a list of women jazz musicians (altho that inclusion is important too) but thinking about what the lack of womens voices in jazz criticism means for what we know and dont know about jazz. Im saying when women come at something men have traditionally left them out of, they can bring new insights and attitudes and considerations that expand the body of work in useful ways and that should not undermine anything. (See: Martha Gellhorn and war correspondence). This shouldnt be a criticism or wrong way to write about music.
