Earlier this week, I argued on a friends wall that the McDaniel campaign is grounded almost entirely in a racial appeal, and not a strictly partisan one. I didnt explain my reasoning very well at the time. Heres why I came to that conclusion. 1. 45.35% of Mississippis general revenue comes from the federal government. Its the single biggest industry in the state: ballotpedia.org/Mississippi_state_budget 2. Chris McDaniels campaign is based primarily on reducing federal expenditures—including disaster relief, but especially social welfare programs. 3. Thad Cochrans entire political career in recent years has been based on the idea that his senior position on the appropriations committee can deliver more federal funding to Mississippi. 4. Taking those two facts into account, the McDaniel-Cochran race is basically about one issue: should Mississippi keep the federal funding that makes up nearly half of its general revenue? 5. What factor, other than racial resentment (which centers on the false belief that most federal social welfare money goes to black residents), would make somebody passionately answer no to that question?
