Earlier this week I attended Carlton Cricket Clubs 150th - TopicsExpress

Earlier this week I attended Carlton Cricket Clubs 150th Anniversary Dinner at the MCG and made a number of postings on the night about Hall of Fame inductees etc . I mentioned a number of players who had represented the club including the likes of Bill Woodful, Keith Stackpole,John Scholes, Carl Hooper, Ian Callen , Paul Hibbert , Abdul Qadir, Rodney Malcolm Hogg, Peter Bedford, Dean Jones ,John Douglas, Richie Robinson, Ray Slug Jordon, current Australian coach Darren Lehman and many, many more. Interesting to note that in the aforementioned group there are three - Scholes,Bedford and Douglas who all played VFL/AFL football and who also represented Victoria at cricket. Going back in time ( to the 19th century!) the Club was also represented by some other great names in Australian cricket history including WEBilly Midwinter who represented both Australia and England inTest cricket, Jack Blackham who was regarded as the prince of wicketkeepers, Jack Saunders , the legendary Jack Worrall who played cricket and football and was a successful coach in both sports- is a member of the AFL Hall of Fame as well. Worrall in 1896 made 417 no for Carlton against the University CC which at the time was an Australian record score ! Another very interesting person to have played at Carlton CC was Sam Morris who was the first coloured man to play for Australia - he created somewhat of a record in his time in club cricket in Victoria by playing for four seperate clubs in consecutive years being Richmond,Carlton,University and South Melbourne. He was also the first black man of any nationality to play Test cricket. Carlton cricket Club certainly a club steeped in a rich, colourful and successful history! So ends todays history lesson!
