Earlier this week, the Joint Budget Conference Subcommitee on Mental Hygiene met, kicking off the budget negotiations in earnest. Chaired by the respective mental health and developmental disabilities committee chairs in each house, Senator David Carlucci and Assemblymember Aileen Gunther, many of the members of the Joint Committee discussed their desire to see certain initiatives included in the final budget agreement including wage enhancements. We must now call upon you to make your voice heard with your elected representatives with regard to the budget priorities for which NYSACRA and NYSRA are advocating. Our message is simple as we strongly support: A 2% SALARY INCREASE FOR DIRECT SUPPORT PROFESSIONALS IN THE DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES SECTOR AND FOR THE HUMAN SERVICES COST OF LIVING ADJUSTMENT (COLA). Please take a few moments from your schedule to call your State Senator and Assemblymember. You may contact your Senator or Assemblymember by calling the Assembly or Senate switchboard and ask to be connected with your representative by name. You may identify your State Senator by going to the Senate website at nysenate.gov. You can identify your State Assemblymembers by going to the Assembly website at assembly.state.ny.us. To contact your State Senator call the Senate switchboard number at 518-455-2800 and ask to be transferred to your Senators Office (by name). To contact your State Assemblymember, call the Assembly switchboard number at 518-455-4100 and ask to be transferred to your Assemblymembers Office (by name). You may wish to use the following script if you so choose: My name is (state your name) and I am a constituent of the Senator/Assemblymember. I wish to thank the Senator/Assemblymember for his/her continued support of people with disabilities and ask that he/she support a 2% salary increase for direct support professionals in the developmental disabilities sector and support the human services COLA in the State Budget. We are grateful for the Senators/Assemblymembers ongoing leadership.
