Earlier this year, Jahan told his piano teacher he would like to learn Rachmaninoffs second concerto. Her response: Dont be ridiculous. Its far too complex. Ask me in ten years. He smiled, shrugged, came home, and started learning it on his own. We also found a new teacher. Last Saturday, he played the piece at a competition. This evening, we were told he was among the winners. He will perform it with a full orchestra in the new year. The point being, I suppose, that people who think they know everything often dont and sometimes its rather cool to defy authority and do what you want....with a smile and a shrug.
