Earlier today I got to have lunch with a cousin I hadnt seen or spoken to in 8 yrs. Growing up we were inseparable, our birthdays two days apart allowed us since birth to be best friends, brothers and of course first cousins who along with our families shared dozens of holidays together, birthday parties, vacations, life achievements and milestones... Like most families do, things happen and lose touch. People blame each other for being the reason you lose touch, you did this... You did that. People lose so much time being mad at each other and so much lost time goes by that you forget why you were mad or werent speaking in the first place. It took us awhile to finally get back in touch but as we did we realized we were both wishing we could of been there for each other during the hard times to help each other, been there for each other for the birth of our children and everything else weve been thru over the years... I know theres many of you out there who or reading this post and can probably think of one friend or one family member in your life who you wish you still had a civil or closer relationship with like you did in the past. My advice to you is to make that extra effort, even if it feels like both of you are giving 50%... Be the one who goes the extra mile for your family. Be the one that goes 80,90,100% and reach out to that person if thats what you want. Call them, text them, Facebook them, real mail... Itll be worth it in the end. Even if they dont accept your friend request the first time around... Remember theres no un family button in life.
