Earlier today I interviewed with Lilly Broadcast (click picture below) to discuss H.R. 3230, Veterans Access, Choice and Accountability Act, which the House will consider later today. While questions remain unanswered and officials at the VA must be held to account for the horrifying and tragic events that have been disclosed, passage of H.R. 3230 in one step toward greater accountability for our veterans who deserve nothing less. The agreement increases veterans access, including allowing veterans to obtain health care at non-VA facilities if they live more than 40 miles from a VA clinic or cant get an appointment at a VA clinic within 30 days. As part of this change, veterans are to be provided by the VA with a Veterans Choice Card, which would be presented to non-VA health care providers to prove the veterans eligibility to receive VA-reimbursed medical services. In order to promote greater accountability, the bill also authorizes the VA secretary to fire or demote VA Senior Executive Service employees based on their performance or misconduct, providing for a limited appeals process during which the employee would not be paid.
