Earlier today I met with Scott Emerson Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Michelle Landry Federal Member for Capricornia, John Kerslake LNP Candidate for Mirani, Deon Attard LNP Candidate for Mackay, and Jason Costigan State Member for Whitsunday, to announce our $189 million commitment to deliver the Eton Range crossing. This section of the Peak Downs Highway is one of Queensland’s most dangerous blackspots and is an important access route for families and freight travelling between mining communities and Mackay. The project will realign the crossing, making it safer for motorists and increasing freight efficiency for businesses. The project was promised by the former Federal Labor Government to be funded with invisible money – Labor’s commitment was inadequate, coming from the failed mining tax which raised virtually nothing, so Labor’s Eton Range promise was in limbo, an empty mirage. The Federal and Queensland Liberal Nationals Governments have resurrected the project, allocating $165 million and $24 million to the upgrade.
