Earlier today at the South LA shelter, a pregnant Chihuahua who was in labor, needed a C-section to save her life. Her owner is a disabled veteran who had planned to get her spayed but wasnt aware of the free programs available. Today, getting her spayed was the least of his problems, his dog was dying, she had passed one dead puppy and according to the emergency room vet that he spent all of his savings on last night, the rest of the puppies were likely dead too. He brought his dog to the shelter as his last chance for help, pleading with the staff to help him. He was referred to our counselor Amanda who negotiated a discounted rate with a local vet. DDR paid $250 with the balance due being set up on a payment plan for the dog owner. Its likely mama dog will survive and she will be spayed. Hopefully some of the three puppies make it. He is not a breeder, neighbors dog mated with her, and this is why there are so many unwanted litters not backyard breeders, accidental litters as a result of lack of resources, lack of information, lack of understanding the most under served
