Earlier today, during a discussion with a client in Hong Kong, I was asked a profound question Who is the most important person to me as a Leader? As a matter of fact, I have been asked, from time to time, the same very question from my ex-colleagues/staff, graduate students, coachees and friends. My answer is always the same. It is the woman whom I have been married over the past 21 years, my beloved wife, Nora Bawany. We all know for a fact that Leaders do not succeed on their own and the loneliness of leadership has been very well documented and many of my C-Suite level coachees will attest to that. Authentic and Level 5 Leaders need multifaceted support structure that includes their spouse, significant other, family members, mentors, coaches and close friends. For me the one person that I can be completely vulnerable and open, warts and all, and still be loved unconditionally is Nora. She is the only one I can tell the honest truth. I believe that your partner should be someone with whom you share mutual commitment, dedication, and love, someone whom can hold up a mirror to tell you the truth, how hard and painful it may be, in a compassionate way when you have strayed from your Leadership Purpose. In Noras eyes, positions and accomplishments means little, but the essence of who you are means everything. I sincerely hope you will be able to find a supporting partner just like Nora who has been able to make me feel unconditionally loved and hence enables me to become less dependent on external reinforcement during challenging times. Love you eternally Belle.
