Earlier today, it was announced that I will be leading HRC Nebraskas efforts as our first-ever Field Organizer on the ground. The love Ive received over the airwaves since then has me in a deeply hopeful and inspired place: one of those cosmic, climactic moments youre supposed to get a few times in your life if youre lucky. Sometimes my #coastal friends ask me how I do it, how I manage to work on LGBT issues in a place like Nebraska. But, if they could see the faces and hear the stories that I do--of the transgender corn and soybean farmer in Malmo, of the gay small business owners in Wayne, of the couple who met at our flagship university in Lincoln 25 years ago and have been in love ever since, of the GSA sponsors in Kearney and Scottsbluff, of the outspoken parents and friends of LGBT people across the state--there would be no doubt about it. Incredible people call this state home--people who deserve to live without fear of violence, without the threat of employment discrimination, without legal barriers to forming loving families, without shame for living openly and authentically. And eventually, we will. :) Again, Im sending out the biggest thank you to everyone in my various communities who have taken care of me, supported me in this journey, and pushed me to do my very best work. I could never do this alone, and Im so very thankful that I dont have to. Lets roll! hrc.org/press-releases/entry/omaha-native-drew-heckman-to-serve-as-hrc-nebraskas-first-ever-field-organi
