Early Sunday morning, November 16, 2014, our two Humane Officers along with local law enforcement rescued eight (8) dogs and arrested 48 people, 47 for felony dog fighting in the City of Akron. Several of the alleged offenders have multiple outstanding warrants for other charges. All eight (8) of the dogs are now being humanely housed at our animal shelter in Twinsburg Township. Two of them were found injured when officers arrived and were initially taken to a local veterinary hospital for wound treatment prior to coming to our shelter. All of the dogs are Pit bulls; and they will be under our care during the criminal proceedings that are expected to take several months. Senior Humane Officer Tim Harland states that “this was a well-coordinated effort among Akron detectives, Akron SWAT and ACSC and Summit County SWAT officers. We arrived on the scene at approximately 11 pm on Saturday night. Once the area was secured Officer O’Herron and I went in and seized the animals.” This is a major incident of alleged dog fighting in Ohio. Under Ohio law it is illegal to promote or to engage in dog fighting, to charge admission to dog fights or to possess, train or sell dogs for fighting. We are hopeful about the future of the dogs and compassionately recognize them as victims. “Dog fighting is a brutal crime that exploits helpless animals for profit; but it also feeds a larger criminal culture often beyond illegal gambling. We are proud to have done our part as a member of the law enforcement community to stop such inhumane treatment of animals in our community.” Specific information about the animals and details of the investigation and arrest will remain confidential as the case proceeds through the criminal justice system.
