Early TL;DR: Neighbors complain of noise when none exists, communications have broken down. Now I will buy those cool new speakers I wanted instead of headphones with my check in January. My upstairs neighbors have made a declaration of war. Theyre complaining of noise by pounding on my ceiling when Im alone and quietly watching TV on my desktop. An original talk with them resulted in what I thought was an understanding. Id cut off my subwoofer completely, and be mindful of playing any loud music or something after 11 PM on weeknights. Rather then banging on my ceiling, a few quiet taps would signal me that whatever sound I was playing was too loud for them, and disturbing their sleep. During one incident following the original meeting, I was just watching SG-1, but there was a gentle tap, and out of respect for their polite methods, I turned it down and made sure to cut the bass. During the original meeting, I thought we reached a fairly amicable agreement, whoever the boyfriend is (the one Ive spoken with), and I apologized, with him producing a thin excuse of his gf dropping her phone and I felt I was being conscientious and neighborly. And that they were too, after the example of them gently tapping. At 10:20 last night, I was quietly listening to the Prince Avalanche soundtrack (a fairly quiet soundtrack, with mostly post-rock gentle guitar, and soft piano.), for my mom and dog to be startled by a massive pounding on the ceiling. I pounded back. The bf stood to the left of the peephole in the hallway, making me subconsciously expect he was planning to ambush. I dont know what his intentions were, but when I walked into the hallway and turned to approach him his demeanor changed from imminent aggression to one of trying to remain passive, but stand his ground while experiencing an adrenaline rush. Ive seen it many times. The conversation was short, and went as follows: Me, approach to face him: Can I help you? Dude, using that shaky voice contained nerves gives us all: You NEED to turn it down. Me: Look man, youre going to have to call the cops or something. I turn my back to him and open my door. Dude: This is your last warning, before we, uh, the police are coming. Me: Good. They no longer have my respect, theyve disturbed my family, Im not going to inconvenience myself in the least for them. They had a chance to friends.
