Early days of the internet, chapter 17. In 1999 I decided I wanted to learn how to build websites. I read a book on html and got the inspiration for my site from the liner notes of a Great Big Sea CD, in which they thanked the Atlantic Canadians in Economic Exile who support them at shows around the world. So I built a site called Atlantic Canadians in Economic Exile, which allowed people from Atlantic Canada who had moved to other parts of Canada or the world to connect with each other, read up on whats happening back home, and take in some other Atlantic Canadian content (recipes, jokes, etc). They could even provide public updates about whats happening in their world. Yahoo Canada named it one of their favourite sites, and I did dozens of radio and newspaper interviews across Canada for the site. There were a couple thousand members (keep in mind that this was 1999 and the internet was still catching on). Then I got a new job and it took up more of my time so I let the domain registration slide. Why not? I mean who would really be interested in a website that allows people with similar interests to connect and share information, pictures, etc? Trying to make social connections via the internet? What a silly idea. Glad I didnt pursue it.
