Early in the am, Beti bolts upright in bed. Mumma! Whats that sound? Listen!. I reply tiredly, Its birds. You know that, silly. Now, shes wide eyed, overly dramatic style. Birds? Birds! In the trees! Because were in Karachi now! Where are the birds?. My eyes are still closed, In the trees in Nanis garden. Amazed, she asks Who put the birds there? My standard conversation-closing answer that I turn to when I am tired or unsure, Allah Taala put the birds in the trees. So we can listen to them sing. Big sigh. Silence from my end cuz Im trying to fall back asleep. Bigger sigh. Really big, really drawn out sigh. I crack an eye open. Shes sitting with a shoulders slumped, head hanging, mouth turned upside down...the picture of drama-induced fake sadness. What is it, why are you sad, Beti? Mumma...Im sad because I weally weally wish Allah Taala did not put birds in the trees. I weally wish He had put weally teeny tiny pink glitter monkeys. Obviously, that was the end of me trying to sleep. The sudden visual of miniature disco primates hanging about outside my window was too much. But, yes, waking up to the twittering of birds is one of the nicest parts of Karachi mornings. If only the kids would stop talking for a little while though.
