Early last week, I left my wallet next to the apartments mailboxes. My neighbour found it and brought to our unit a few hours later, I was still completely unaware I had lost it! As a thank you dish for him, I had spent almost 4 days smelling like fermented rice yeast making these Steamed Rice Cakes from the Taste of Asia cookbook pg. 85. I know theres probably a shorter version to make these things. Ive just never made them before... Making them smile (crack open) was a big challenge. The first batch was completely dense and jelly-like. The second batch has more of a spongy consistency. These cakes are commonly made during the Chinese New Year celebrations.
