Early morning call from Cliff: I can have the morning off! Yay! Two nights ago the clouds were building up on the eastern horizon. Lightning flashed from one end of the vast sky to the other, lighting up the very ominous looking storm build-up. Thunder was grumbling inside the belly of this frightening mass of darkness and clouds. We started unplugging our electrical ware, losing out on some tv watching and filling the flask with hot water, flashlights ready at our fingertips. The breeze became a monster wind, tossing our outside chairs and tables everywhere, randomly hitting at the house and whistled through every opening it could find. Then it became silent, we waited with bated breath for the full onslaught. To our utter amazement, the storm circled right around Marloth Park, gathered again towards the west and rumbled off into the night sky to who knows where. The most beautiful, refreshing rain started falling. The outside light lit up the silver streaks of drops, then the tumbling gentle mistiness of feathery rain. Yesterday the soft rain came down in as gentle a breeze, cooling this hot place, brushing lovingly on the cheek or the arm, glistening on the hair. We breathed it in, enjoyed it with sweet abandon, walking in it, tasting it, smelling the freshness of earth and leaves. This morning the wispy clouds, at some places fairly thick as to blot out the sunshine, are still hanging over us. A few tiny drops rippled the water in the pond. And with this the humidity. Thick, breathless, pressing humidity, squeezing every drop of sweat from the body. This is a country with harsh elements, but also as excellent are the gifts of rain and breezes, of wildflowers beyond description in their beauty, greens of all colours in the trees and shrubs, animals playing, eating, mating, sleeping, birds of all kinds, stunning insects, LIFE! Such splendour.
