Early on a summer morning...I was in my studio attempting to pray–that is, I was sitting in a chair with my eyes closed–when the swarm of thoughts that normally buzz through my mind settled for a minute and left a wide open space. Into it came an image of a flame. More than an image, it was as if, near my right ear, a word was on fire. The next day I went to church and discovered it was Pentecost.
