Early this morning, I watched The Last of the Buccaneers, from 1950, starring Paul Henreid as the infamous pirate Jean Lafitte. Factual errors were hysterically funny. First off, Jean Lafitte was not actually present at the Battle of New Orleans. He was NOT responsible for founding Galveston (another pirate was!); in this howler of a film he and his men fight Plains Indians (!!!); New Orleans is surrounded by mountains, Galveston, sitting high atop a hill (at the time, Galveston was mostly a sand bar), was attacked and burned by the U.S. Army (in Mexican territory) after being sent by Louisiana Governor Claiborne, but during the battle, artillery was firing *down* into the city...the flintlock rifles and pistols never needed to be reloaded...unbelievable...
