Earth Week will take place from April 7-11. We would like to invite everyone to support our school wide goal to reduce paper and to continue our work on reducing the number of plastic water bottles used on campus, as well as to raise awareness through specific themes every day for Environmental Issues. Every Day has a theme and is sponsored by one group: Monday is Lights-out Day: Please turn off lights (computers and SmartBoards!) that you dont really need (all week/year if possible!) to raise awareness about the quantity of electricity used globally. Tuesday is Plastic-Free Day: Dont forget your reusable water bottles. Support Habitat and buy a Camelback to raise awareness about the amount of plastic bottles used at AIS and the effects on environment. Wednesday is Vegetarian Day: Give the daily Vegetarian Menu a try at the cafeteria and buy some treats at the Vegan Bakesale during lunch to raise awareness about global effects on unfair trade of food, the positive effects of regional products and the negative effects to too much meat consumption. Thursday is Paper-less Day: Please try to avoid the use of paper. If necessary, print double sided or use half sheets to raise awareness about the paper usage at AIS. Friday is Green Day: Please wear green. “Think Green and Live Green” to encourage the community to continue their efforts throughout the year. In 2008, through assistance with the Environmental Club, we outlined a roadmap to build sustainability at AIS. In 2009, over 30 students, teachers and administrators developed the ethic statement and goals that appear in the student handbooks. In 2010, the group involved parents, support staff, Eurest, Technology, and the Business office which gave a broader voice to this process. In 2011, the groups made commitments around the goals and reported out in 2012. The Environmental Ethics became a sieve in discussions involving the Strategic Plan. We must all continue to look at ways to make this movement itself more sustainable.
