Earth and Space Science Lecture November 5 Shaky Grounds: Tectonics and Volcanism Throughout the Solar System Sean Tvelia, Associate Professor of Geology, & NASA Solar System Ambassador. On Earth continents and ocean basins move across the surface as described by plate tectonics. The same processes that allow these movements also produce one of Earth’s most fascinating geologic features: volcanoes. Although many other planets and moons across the solar system have volcanoes, none of them indicate the presence of plate tectonics like Earth. Do these planetary surfaces change? What causes their volcanoes? In this highly illustrated lecture, Sean Tvelia, Associate Professor of Geology and a NASA Solar System Ambassador, will discuss how plate tectonics produces volcanoes on Earth and, using images from some of the latest NASA missions, show how these processes compare with those operating on other worlds. LOCATION: Ammerman Campus, Smithtown Science Building, room T109, START TIME: 11.15 a.m. lasting approximately 45 minutes with time for questions. Teachers who attend the lecture can obtain a certificate of attendance for in-service teaching credits.
