Earth science is concerned with understanding and managing the earth’s system of surficial interactions involving sediment, soil, ocean and fresh waters, and the atmosphere. The study of environmental earth science embraces many current global concerns including responsible resource utilisation, climate change, water pollution and land degradation. Earth science studies range from geology – the science of the solid matter that constitutes the earth – encompassing rocks, soil and gemstones, to hydrology – the study of the earth’s processes involved in the water cycle.
