EastEnders bosses announced this week that Barbara Windsor will be reprising her iconic role as Peggy Mitchell next year for one of the shows 30th anniversary episodes. Peggy will appear in one episode as part of the anniversary week, which will also include a 30-minute live instalment. A statement recently teased that the special week would give a nod to the past and welcome the future and the exciting news about Peggys return got us thinking about the other characters we would like to see make a comeback for the milestone. Here are some of our suggestions: Grant Mitchell (Ross Kemp) No return story would be quite as explosive as Grant Mitchells and this is the comeback that practically every EastEnders fan wants to see. Grant can be remembered for his dodgy dealings, his weakness for women and the famous love triangle (often referred to as Sharongate) in which his wife Sharon had an affair with his brother Phil. With Phil and Sharon now married and his mother Peggy returning for the anniversary celebrations, an appearance from Grant would be the icing on the cake. Would he fight Phil for Sharon? What would he make of his troubled nephew Ben? And of course, who could forget his fling with Jane Beale? The storyline possibilities are endless! Michelle Fowler (Susan Tully) As we last saw Michelle nearly 20 years ago when she left for America, a return for the character has been a very long time coming . Her younger brother Martin (played by the newly recast James Bye) has recently returned to the Square, her cousin Ian Beale is at the centre of one of the shows anniversary storylines and her best friend Sharon is still around. Therefore, it is hard to think of a more appropriate time for her to make a comeback. Having been away for so long, Walford would be a very different place to the one she remembers, but with the 30th rolling round, surely now is the perfect time to shed some light on what Michelle been up to for the past couple of decades? Zoe Slater (Michelle Ryan) Zoe Slater discovering that her sister Kat was in fact her mother during a showdown in the middle of the Square is undoubtedly one of EastEnders most iconic moments. Zoes world was changed forever after she screeched You aint my mother and Kat replied with Yes I am and the emotional moment not only irrevocably altered the Slater family tree, but also altered the shows history. Zoe can also be remembered for being an obstacle in Sharon Watts and Dennis Rickmans love story, hitting Dirty Den over the head with a doorstop and subsequently being involved in covering up his death. She left in 2005 for a new life in Ibiza, but with Kat and cousin Stacey still in Albert Square, a rumoured reappearance from her father Charlie and a trio of siblings she has probably never met, Zoe certainly still has ties to Walford. Although Sharon might have a word or two for her! Sean Slater (Rob Kazinsky) Seans stint in Walford lasted little under two years but he certainly made his mark in that time. From his fractured relationship with his mother Jean, his loyalty to sister Stacey Branning and his ill-fated marriage to Roxy Mitchell – Sean was involved in some explosive storylines before disappearing in 2009. Actor Rob Kazinsky has previously admitted that he was never satisfied with the way things were left with Sean, adding that he would never say never to a return. As far as we know Stacey hasnt heard from Sean since he left, but with his memorable habit of surprising people, it is anyones guess as to when he could reappear again! Zainab Masood (Nina Wadia) Zainab was the matriarch of the Masood family and it is fair to say that things have been a little quiet for them since she left last year. However, with both the shows boss Dominic Treadwell-Collins and actor Nitin Ganatra recently teasing huge stories for the family next year, could a comeback for Zainab add to the drama? The plot is said to feature around Shabnam, who was described as a chip off her mothers block upon her return earlier this year, and will also bring out a darker side to Masood. One thing is for sure, there certainly wouldnt be a dull moment with Zainab back... Janine Butcher (Charlie Brooks) There are few soap villains who are as memorable as Janine Butcher and there would certainly be no shortage of drama if she was to return next year. Janine was last seen earlier in the year as she prepared to board a train to Paris having got away with murdering her husband Michael Moon. Although Janine departed as a free woman, her final moments on screen hinted at more scheming to come, as she was intrigued to meet a couple who had just won the lottery. Actress Charlie Brooks said at the time of her exit that she would never rule out a return to the soap, and it would be a great treat for fans to learn of her scheming in the months she has been away. Steven Beale (Aaron Sidwell) Fans have been speculating about whether Steven Beale would return to Walford ever since his younger sister Lucy was murdered earlier in the year. Steven emerged as a very troubled character during his last stint and was responsible for hiding (a then-teenage) Lucy from her family, holding Ian hostage and shooting Jane. Aaron Sidwell, who was the last actor to play Steven, ruled out a potential return following the speculation earlier in the year, but with the Beales set to take centre stage throughout the 30th anniversary episodes, a return for Steven seems very possible. Lucy Beale - flashbacks (Hetti Bywater) The ongoing mystery of who killed Lucy Beale has been a talking point for months and the storyline is set to finally conclude in February. As several characters appear to be hiding a secret about the night she died, flashback scenes of her final moments alive might help viewers piece together the events that took place prior to her death. Hetti Bywater recently reprised the role for a Children in Need sketch in which Ian was faced with several ghosts from his past and Lucy returning one last time would be a great way for the lengthy plot to reach its climax. Dr Legg (Leonard Fenton) Dr Legg was one of the original 23 characters created when the show first began in 1985 but remains the most memorable doctor that the show has had to date. Although he arguably didnt provide the drama that many other characters on this list did, he was widely trusted among the Walford community and a loyal friend of Dot Cottons. Dr Legg has made fleeting appearances since hanging up his stethoscope - most notably for the funerals of Ethel Skinner and Mark Fowlers in 2004 respectively – so one final return to celebrate 30 years of EastEnders would be very fitting. Who would you like to see back in EastEnders for a 30th anniversary comeback?
