Eat Local Water! Many people are concerned about food miles - TopicsExpress

Eat Local Water! Many people are concerned about food miles with respect of fossil fuel use but an often overlooked aspect of imported foods is the transfer of water from one area to another (and of course nutrients). Too much water is being withdrawn from the available resources and this causes a stress to the environment - and obviously one that the land/ecosystem in California is not recovering from. Of course there is a climate change component - change in rainfall and snow rates and patterns are not supplying the recharge amounts needed to sustain the production level that California is presently trying to achieve. It needs a rest. The accompanying article landed in my Twitter feed this morning. The maps in the article really graphic representation of what is happening in California (where we in Alberta get a very large portion of our fresh produce at certain times of the year). What can we do about this? We can start reducing our consumption of Californian produce - especially non organic produce (tends to use more water per acre than organic production). Slowly so that the producers are not slapped with a sudden decrease in demand. Nature will demand that things change and we can be respectable enough to help these producers by slowing our demands for Californian water intensive produce. We should eat foods that do not stress the local environ that they are grown in - respect for the land, the air, the water and the workers. Local farmers markets and growing your own are good options. So lets eat more local water.
