Eat your way to younger skin by adding these foods to your diet: - TopicsExpress

Eat your way to younger skin by adding these foods to your diet: nuts, avocados, salmon, green tea, pomegranates and tomatoes. You may be surprised to learn that a lot of whole foods contain nutrients that help protect your skin. Here are some of our favorites. Eggs, legumes, avocados, soybeans and nuts: All of these foods contain biotin, an essential nutrient for fat and carbohydrate metabolism. A lack of biotin (caused by excessive antibiotic use or an inadequate diet) can lead to dry skin or dermatitis of the face or scalp. A biotin deficiency can also cause your hair and nails to become brittle and frail. Salmon: This fish contains astaxanthin, the carotenoid that gives salmon its pink color and improves skin’s elasticity. Salmon is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, and its DHA makes your skin and hair look younger and healthier. Green tea: This tea contains polyphenols that scavenge inflammatory free radicals, protect against light damage and make the skin’s outer layer, or epidermis, more resilient. It may also help prevent sunburn. Green tea can be taken orally or applied topically. Pomegranates: In addition to thickening the epidermis and helping skin cells produce more collagen and elastin, pomegranates contain phytonutrients that seem to accelerate wound healing. Tomatoes: The nutrients in tomatoes reduce the chance that you will get a sunburn, so bulk up on them (with olive oil or walnuts to help absorb the fat-soluble active ingredients) before your summer vacation. The effect may be due to lycopene, the red pigment in tomatoes, but this hasn’t been proven yet, so enjoy tomatoes themselves rather than a lycopene supplement.
