Eating beans, peas, chickpeas or lentils can significantly reduce LDL “bad” cholesterol and, as a result, heart disease. Recent research published in the Canadian Medical Journal showed that adding just one daily serving of “pulses”—the term used to describe beans, peas, chickpeas and lentils—can reduce bad cholesterol by 5 percent. That translates to 5 or 6 percent reduction in the risk of cardiovascular disease.
