Ebola Outbreak Fact Sheet - Current outbreak in West Africa is the worst on record, but remains largely focused on Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone. The World Health Organization estimates there are roughly 9000 total cases in these countries, and accounts for 4424 total deaths. - One case in Spain, one case in Senegal, three cases in the US, and twenty cases in Nigeria represent the only known international transmission of the virus to date. Nigeria has not reported any new cases since early September. - The United States and United Kingdom have enacted additional medical screening at airports with flights receiving travelers from the infected areas. No cases of infected travelers have been identified as a result of the screenings. - Virus mortality rates vary between 30% and 90%. There is no known vaccine or cure. Survival rates can be affected by the availability of IV fluids, oxygen delivery, and symptomatic treatment. The virus reaches full lethality six to sixteen days after the first symptoms appear, but is considered contagious before then. - Transmission of the virus is only known to occur through bodily fluids, but other delivery methods have not been ruled out through extensive testing. It has not, however, been identified as readily airborne or transmitting through mosquitos.
