Ebola virus: Just the facts Because of the recent Ebola outbreak in West Africa and limited US cases, it seems important to discuss some of the facts about Ebola. Parents and families are naturally concerned and its difficult to obtain accurate information through media sources. So, lets take a closer look at Ebola so that we can be informed and hopefully decrease some of the concerns regarding its transmission. 1. Ebola is a virus that was originally seen in primates such as apes or monkeys and also in fruit bats. 2. Ebola is only spread through direct person to person contact through the exposure to bodily fluids such as mucus, vomit, blood, saliva, and feces of a person infected with the Ebola virus. 3. Ebola is not spread through the air, by water, or insect bites such as mosquitoes. 4. Healthcare providers and close family member caring for someone with the Ebola virus are at highest risk of transmission. 5. Once a person recovers from the virus they can no longer spread the virus to others.
