Echo Echo Festival begins today! In our final Festival preview article, we look at the Short Works programme that will be spread over two evenings from on Friday 7th and Monday 10th November. We had a wonderful response to an Open Call for proposals during summer and a result of that the Festival will feature 14 different dance and movement based works. This is a fantastic opportunity to see a wide range of very different works by local and international artists. Locally-based dance companies Ascent from North West Regional College present Cognition directed by Carie Logue-Houston with a large number of collaborators; and ZonaDance from Letterkenny present Periphery, a new quintet directed by Jessica Peoples fusing contemporary dance and performance styles. Acclaimed Derry-based musician, Ronan Kearney, will curate a programme of three short works with guest musicians and Echo Echo Ensemble dance artists. Sorcha Shanahan’s exploratory solo ‘The Women’ will merge text with movement, physicality and sound. Argyro Tsampazi from Greece and currently living in Derry will present ‘In for the Kill’, investigative work developed after research into how the instinct of violence can inspire artists. Oona Doherty’s solo commission for last year’s programme was totally gripping so we are delighted that she will premiere a new work, ‘The Shake Out’, this year. London-based artist Valeria Famularo will present ‘Study of Hands#1’, a deeply researched work inspired by sculptor, August Rodin. Sibeal Davitt and Olwyn Lyons, recent graduates of Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music & Dance and The Irish World Academy at University of Limerick, present new multimedia duet piece ‘In this space’; and Dublin-based Claire Bonnie will present her video work ‘Momentary Flux’ on both evenings downstairs in Studio Two. We are very please to welcome several international guests to present solo works in the Short Works programme: Alba Lorca from Spain premiering new work ‘Wilderness’; Alessandro Sollima from Catania, Italy premieres new work ‘Ad Libitum 2.0’; Maria Papathanasiou from Athens, Greece presents ‘BetWeeN’, multimedia piece based on the seven deadly sins; and Lily Akerman from New York, also presents ‘Anitra’s Dance’, a solo about chasing, or facing, the unknown. Each artist will perform only once so do join us for both evenings to see everything.
