Economic Growth and Development in Myanmar – A Retrospective View 2001-2010 and Strategies, Plans and Projections for the Next Ten Years Tin Htoo Naing International Conference on GMS 2020: Balancing Economic Growth and Environmental Sustainability (2012) 1. Introduction Asia including the GMS has become the world’s fastest growing region during the last few decades and the key player of rearchitecturing the world economic setting in the 21st century, which is often branded as the Asian Century. Consequently, the economies in the region are facing a number of challenges in environmental conservation as all developmental activities involve some amount of environmental degradation. While there are a number of different challenges in each economy, the environmental issue is a common challenge for all member economies of the region. However, the nature and extent of impact vary from country to country depending on the human, institutional, technological and financial capability of the country concerned. Therefore, the critical point to be considered in policy making is to take into account the damage to environment as a result of development, and strike a balance between development and environmental protection (Field 2002 ). Although the GMS is rapidly growing on average, its countries and peoples are at different development and income levels. Since most of the members of GMS are developing economies with low levels of income and in many cases, lack human and institutional capacity, balancing economic growth and environmental sustainability has become crucial in the framework of Kuznets Environmental curve (KEC). This study attempts to review the Myanmar economic development performance during the last decade and consider emerging issues and challenges on the pathway to developing the countrys economic sector without causing irreparable damage to the environment in the next decade.
