Economy Myanmar’s seafood exports are expected to increase this year as the European Union has implemented a plan to purchase cultured (farmed) seafood products from Myanmar. Many buyers from the EU, the US and other countries have expressed interest in buying wild shrimp and other wild and farmed species such as Tilapia from Myanmar. Myanmar produced 4.5 million tons of seafood products including wild and farmed species in 2012, up from 4.1 million tons in 2011. Myanmar currently produces tilapia, grouper, pangasius and shrimp. The shrimp business is seen as particularly profitable, and Myanmar and Bangladesh jointly account for 90 percent of Black Tiger and Pacific White shrimp production globally.
