Eddie Vedder on the Pearl Jam song Alive: You know, Alive was the first song we wrote... and its about an adolescent boy who gets some really terrible news that leaves him really confused and angry and depressed. I know, because I knew the guy. Not well, but I knew him. The guy was me. I didnt know myself very well, though, because I was barely there to even be known. But that chorus, Im still Alive, I wrote it as a curse, like life sucks and Ive gotta find a way to deal with it, because Im still Alive, even though I dont wanna be. But heres the thing: as we got famous and we played to bigger audiences and Id hear all these people belting that chorus at the top of their lungs, full of joy, it changed the meaning of the song. It became, theres always hope, because Im still Alive. And you know what? Seeing and hearing people sing it like that is what finally lifted the curse for me. Yeah, the angsty 16 year old boy in me is out-of-his-mind excited to see Pearl Jam tomorrow night in Memphis.
