Edger Lungus popularity So we have been told by Edger Lungu and - TopicsExpress

Edger Lungus popularity So we have been told by Edger Lungu and his followers that he is the most popular person. First and foremost, does it mean that for the PF, only popularity matters for one to become party president and eventually republican President? What about character and integrity? What about ability and skill? What about patriotism to our country? We would have gone on to discuss Lungus character but may be that is a discussion for another day. What makes Lungu to be confident of his popularity? Where is Lungu popular; in Eastern province, in Chawama or is it just among the 70 MPs who happen to have personal interests to protect. It is Ironic that a popular man would not want to subject himself to an electorate of only 5000 people. It would appear that Lungu and his supporters seem to think that he is popular because he was cheered by the crowd during President Satas funeral. But from what we know Robert Mugabe received the largest cheers from that crowd at the funeral. Equally other leaders were also cheered. We are told Lungu is popular yet he is unwilling to face a vote even in the central committee itself; a committee of just 53 people! What is it that Lungu is afraid of? Why should a popular candidate be a sole candidate? May be Lungu is equating himself to President Sata who went through unopposed at the last PF general conference in Kabwe. But President Satas popularity was well known by then. He had just gone through a NATIONAL election where he got 36 percent of the vote. Sata had walked the campaign trail for ten years rising to become the leading opposition figure. What his supporters may not know is that Lungu may not even have firm roots even in the Eastern province. Even the so called immigration officers who went to look for his roots only found one old woman. Where are the rest of Lungus relatives? In fact, now we are tempted to think that the detention and interviewing of his auntie was commissioned by Lungu himself; to approve his popularity. This is not beyond Lungu. Didnt he get Joseph Katema to start telling the nation that he (Lungu) was anointed by President Sata to takeover. We have also heard assertions that the children who cheered Lungu at the funeral where planted by Mumbi Phiri. That is how desperate Lungu and his camp are. Let Lungu beat GBM, Miles Sampa and Given Lubinda at the general conference or in the central committee. Then he can face Hakainde Hichilema and others with confidence in the national race. Lungu seems to think that all he needs is the PF presidency and the republican Presidency will come on a silver platter. Basi! Let him learn from Rupiah Banda. Rupiah Banda rose to power riding on strong MMD structures built over 20 years and President Mwanawasas legacy. What followed after this? RB lost power within 3 years despite staging one of the most expensive campaigns in the history of Africa. Popularity doesnt come with a tearless wail, it does not come easy.
