Edinburgh Doors Open Day 2013 Walk guided by the Institution of Civil Engineers: The Water of Leith from Canonmills to Dean Bridge Sunday, 29 September, 2.00 p.m. Welcome to everyone who has joined us on this walk of a short stretch of Edinburgh’s river, the Water of Leith. The Water of Leith played an important role in Edinburgh’s industrial heritage, providing power to more than 70 mills along its length in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The river has also acted as a barrier to communication and development at a number of crossing points for which bridges were required. This walk starts at the Canonmills Bridge and concludes about a mile and a half later at the Dean Bridge on Queensferry Road. Not a great distance, but but there’s a whole lot of histoy about the development of Edinburgh in it and we’ll try to cover as much as we can. Of course, it’s likely that some of you will know more than we do about various parts of this walk and we’d encourage you to share that with us as we go. Route and features: • Canonmills, the Canonmills Clock, Robert Louis Stevenson • Other features in area we won’t have time to see in the area, but will mention: Rodney Street railway tunnel, Scotland Street railway tunnel, King George V park, Royal Patent Gymnasium and St Bernard’s FC • Canonmills Bridge • Canonmills Loch • Tanfield • The Water of Leith flood prevention scheme • The Falshaw Bridge and The Colonies • The Stockbridge • The Mackenzie Bridge and mill lade arch • St Bernard’s Well • St George’s Well including local geology and the mill lade • The Dean Bridge at water level including part of Dean Village • The Dean Bridge at Queensferry Road, including Holy Trinity Church and Kirkbrae House
